review 1: This is a story about a young girl named Minli, and her parents Ma and Ba. They are a very poor family and they work to grow rice. The family puts a lot of time and effort for the rice fields and in return they barley get enough food to feed the family. Despite there situation, Ba and Minli try to make the best of the situation, and Ba tells stories to Minli to keep them both entertained and to try to forget about the terrible life they have. Ma does not like the stories and she complains that they are filling Minli head with nonsense and are causing more harm than good. Minli loves the stories and asks for more, but father refuses so he does not displease Ma. Through out the story she try's to help the family fortune. This book can hold a reader in with no problem. There ... moreseems to be hidden messages in this story. Do not be selfish and think of others is one I picked up on from dragon Jade. Minli is teaching to try to make the best out of every bad situation and that when the bad comes, it will eventually pass and the good will come along after. The descriptive words Grace Lin used helped paint a wonderful and colorful movie in my head. This book can be used to discuss different cultures in a classroom. Lin, G. (2009). review 2: A classic, this book is. Unlike a big variety of other books, where the cultural stories do not reflect upon the true story, the Chinese takes inside this story is surprisingly accurate. Once you start reading, you will not be able to stop. This book is about a bgiel who hopes to strike rich by going to find the old man of the moon. She encounters many adventures on her way,a dm yet also many tragedies. Grace Lin does a good job of incorporating other Chinese takes into the story. less
